Joseph Amadeus Fleck

Joseph Amadeus Fleck (1892–1977) was an Austrian-born painter who became a leading figure in early 20th-century Southwestern art. Trained at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he brought European technique and sensibility to the rugged landscapes and cultural richness of New Mexico after settling in Taos in the 1920s. A member of the Taos Society circle, Fleck’s work captured the spirit of the region—its people, architecture, and dramatic light—through a modernist lens. His murals and easel paintings reflect both a deep respect for local traditions and a bold, stylized approach that helped define a uniquely American art movement in the Southwest.
